Meta’s top leaders, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth, and chief product officer Chris Cox are spending most of their precious time working on artificial intelligence, according to an interview Bosworth gave to Nikkei Asia Wednesday.

Bosworth expressed that some of this work will benefit the metaverse to build the digital world. This shows that AI is very valuable to Meta, as other large technology firms such as Microsoft and Alphabet are also investing in the AI space.

Meta currently owns Facebook as well as Instagram. It announced a product group in February focused on generative AI. Meta has its own large language model that it told in February it would release to researchers.

Meta’s Reality Labs division is home to the firm’s metaverse technologies and projects. It makes up the bulk of Meta’s revenue through digital advertising. The firm reported $116.61 billion in revenue last year.

Bosworth told that he expects the Meta will debut some commercial applications using AI in 2023, and it will probably help its profit-driving ad business.

He said, “Companies can use AI to create ads by generating several images that work for different audiences instead of relying on a single-image advertising campaign.”

Bosworth added, “In the future, you might be able to just describe the world you want to create and have the large language model generate that world for you. And so it makes things like content creation much more accessible to more people.”

Meta hopes to apply its AI technology to all of its products and services, including both Instagram and Facebook.
